“How on earth did you find all these ROADS? I’ve lived here 25 years and have never been on these roads!”
At 4118 feet in elevation, Highlands, North Carolina provides the ultimate starting point for car enthusiast cruses. Leading off the plateau are endless miles of scenic winding mountain roads. Some roads are seasonal, but most are suitable for year-round driving enjoyment.
The Highlands Motoring Festival founders recognized years ago that incorporating a driving event into the HMF activities would be very popular. Each year, on the Friday before Saturday’s Cars in the Park classic car show, One Lap of the Mountains rolls out of Highlands on a different backroad adventure, covering 160-180 miles round trip. Popularity has grown to the point that the event is sold out for at least six weeks in advance. To better accommodate all our mountain driver friends, in 2018 the Highlands Motoring Festival published One Lap of the Mountains, Exciting Drives for Car Enthusiasts, a route guide of mountain drives suitable for all interests.
“Thanks so much for putting all these routes together. I thought I knew all the backroads in Western North Carolina but after driving a One Lap of the Mountain route I realize I was wrong. Where are we going next?”
One Lap of the Mountains, Exciting Drives for Car Enthusiasts includes the Highlands Motoring Festival six original One Lap of the Mountain routes including lunch stops along with a couple of shorter “brunch cruises.” For the adventurous driver with an SUV or other high clearance vehicle, there are four auto hike routes which incorporate some of Highlands more interesting unpaved roads. All drives originate and end in in Kelsey-Hutchinson park on Pine Street in Highlands. The book describes each route in detail and provides an easy to follow mileage log from beginning to end.
One Lap of the Mountains, Exciting Drives for Car Enthusiasts is a collective effort by Highlands residents Jan and Gus Lard, Knight Martorell, Steve Ham and Russell Majors of Dauntless Printing. The book will be available for purchase at the Highlands Motoring Festival Saturday Cars in the Park, and at the Highlands Visitor Center.
Web order price for One Lap of the Mountains, Exciting Drives for Car Enthusiasts is $35 for each book which includes US postage and handling. All profit from the sale of these books benefit the charities of the Highlands Motoring Foundation.
